Eagle Nests Trail
The Eagle Nests Trail is a scenic route running through the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, connecting Kraków with Częstochowa. Its name comes from medieval castles and watchtowers built on inaccessible limestone rocks, resembling eagle nests. Most of them were erected during the reign of King Casimir the Great, who 'found Poland wooden and left it brick'. Today they are picturesque ruins, such as the castles in Ogrodzieniec, Smoleń, and Bydlin. The trail is popular among both hikers and cyclists – the cycling route is well-marked and leads along local roads, forest paths, and fields. Along the way, you can admire not only the castles but also the characteristic limestone rock formations that give the landscape a unique character. The region offers many other attractions, such as Głęboka Cave, Złoty Potok, and Olsztyn Castle. The trail is open year-round and free of charge. It is an ideal place for families, groups of friends, and couples seeking active outdoor recreation.
