Ogrodzieniec Castle
Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze is the most famous and impressive castle on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, and one of the most majestic ruins in Poland. Situated on Janowski Hill (515 m above sea level), the highest point of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, it offers breathtaking views. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when the first fortifications were built, destroyed by the Tatars in 1241. The stone castle was erected by Casimir the Great, and in the 16th century the Boner family rebuilt it in the Renaissance style, earning it the nickname 'the second Wawel'. The castle declined after the Swedish Deluge (1655–1660) and the Great Northern War (1702), and in 1810 the last inhabitants left. Today, after conservation work, it is open as a museum. The tour route leads through the courtyard, the credence tower (from which, on a clear day, you can see Smoleń Castle), and exhibitions with films and models. From May to September, numerous outdoor events take place, such as knight fights and night tours. Nearby, there are climbing rocks and a reconstruction of a Slavic stronghold on Birów Hill. It is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, families, and groups.
