Krakow Nativity Scenes

📍 Kraków, PL🕒 1–3 hoursSeasonal

Krakow nativity scenes (szopki krakowskie) are a unique Christmas tradition dating back to the 19th century. Every year on the first Thursday of December, a competition for the most beautiful nativity scene is held under the Adam Mickiewicz monument in Krakow's Main Square. After a month of jury deliberations, following the Feast of the Three Kings, all entries are exhibited at the Krzysztofory Palace (Rynek Główny 35). The exhibition attracts families with children, art students, and tourists from around the world. The nativity scenes feature slender towers inspired by Krakow's architecture, rich decorations, and often moving mechanisms and music boxes. The tradition originated with bricklayers and builders from villages near Krakow, who created the scenes during winter as an additional source of income. The competition, first held in 1937 (with a wartime break), has been organized annually since 1945. Today, both adults and children participate, ensuring the survival of this unique art form. Admission to the exhibition is free with a museum ticket, and a visit takes 1 to 3 hours. Facilities include toilets, a café, and a gift shop.
