Szczebrzeszyn

Szczebrzeszyn is a charming town in the Lublin Voivodeship, located on the border of the Roztocze region, on the Wieprz River, about 20 km west of Zamość. The town is famous for the beetle from Jan Brzechwa's poem, and its symbols are monuments of this insect – a wooden sculpture from 2002 at the foot of Castle Hill and a two-meter bronze cast from 2011 in the Market Square. The central point is the Market Square (Kościuszko Square) with an impressive Town Hall from 1840, surrounded by tenement houses with preserved underground ice cellars. The oldest monument is the Church of St. Nicholas from 1610–20 in the Lublin Renaissance style, where in 1842 the great-grandparents of Karol Wojtyła were married. The former synagogue from the 16th century now houses the Municipal Cultural Center with a tourist information point. Szczebrzeszyn is an excellent base for exploring the Roztocze National Park, offering hiking and cycling trails as well as kayaking on the Wieprz River. Most attractions are free of charge.
