Błędów Desert

Błędów Desert is a unique area of shifting sands in Europe, located in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland near Klucze in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It was created by medieval deforestation for lead and silver mining in Olkusz, which lowered the groundwater level and led to desertification. Today it is a nature reserve and viewpoint, attracting visitors with its sandy dunes and wide panoramas. Although its area has shrunk from 150 km² to about 30 km², it still hosts rare species such as the wasp spider and the large blue butterfly. The best view is from Czubatka Hill, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the entire desert. Other viewpoints include Róża Wiatrów and Dąbrówka Hill. Admission is free, and free parking is available. It is an ideal spot for family walks, cycling, or nature observation. The desert is open seasonally and accessible by public transport.
