Gorlice
Gorlice, known as the City of Light, is a picturesque town in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, nestled at the foot of the Low Beskids between Nowy Sącz and Jasło. It was here in 1854 that Ignacy Łukasiewicz lit the world's first street oil lamp, marking the symbolic beginning of the global petroleum industry. The town is a key point on the Carpathian-Galician Oil Trail. Highlights include the Karwacjanów Manor, the seat of the town's founders, which houses the Karwacjanów and Gładyszów Museum with an art gallery. The Regional Museum PTTK, located in the oldest tenement house, features exhibits on the Battle of Gorlice (1915) and oil extraction history. A striking mural of Łukasiewicz with his lamp adorns the museum building. The iconic chapel with a replica of the oil lamp and a commemorative mural can be found on Węgierska Street. The town also boasts insect murals inspired by the collection of naturalist priest Bronisław Świeykowski. Gorlice is perfect for history buffs, oil industry enthusiasts, and street art lovers. Admission to most attractions is free.
