Görlitz
Görlitz is a picturesque town in Saxony, right on the Polish border, famous for its exceptionally well-preserved old town. It boasts around 4,000 monuments, ranging from Gothic to Art Nouveau, making it one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Strolling along cobblestone streets, you can admire richly decorated portals, merchant houses with impressive ribbed vaults, and the monumental St. Peter and Paul Church. The city survived WWII unscathed, and thanks to an anonymous donor, many tenement houses have been restored to their former glory. Görlitz is also a symbol of Polish-German reconciliation – it is connected to the Polish town of Zgorzelec by the Old Town Bridge. Visitors can explore museums, cafes, and restaurants, and take guided tours. It is an ideal weekend destination for families, couples, and groups.
